Launched in the year 2002, the national level competitive exam for engineering is for entrance to various under-graduate engineering and architecture courses in institutes accepting the AIEEE score, mainly 30 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and 5 Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs). Applicants were ranked on an all-India structure and state base. Hence, they have an All India Rank (AIR) and a State Rank (SR). The All India Engineering Entrance Examination was replaced by Joint Entrance Examination on April 2013.

The entrance test for engineering consists of two papers: One intended for B.E./BTech courses and the second with regard to BArch courses. A aspirant may opt for any specific or each of those papers.

Paper 1 has three portions: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry subjects. Each one consists of multiple choice objective-type questions all of that has four choices. Beyond the four choices only one choice is correct to the given question. It has a negative-marking scheme whereas an incorrect answer is negatively marked with one fourth of the maximum marks designated to the question.
