The tough competition seems to have a scenario where many students negligence their school studies and concentrate entirely on college entrance exam preparation which is time-consuming and expensive. This seems to have a number of states to refuse the university entrance exam and base admissions on the school leaving marks which, however are non-e too reliable. Professionals suggests that in a country where many different boards are present common college admission tests are essential, however application skills rather then studying should be stressed on. Regular modifications in the pattern of examination are necessary since sticking to a 'standard text' or 'standard pattern' by itself will favour the coaching industry and the rote-learners.

Entrance Examinations in India trace their roots to the University of Calcutta, which established in 1857, launched the exercise to consider university entrance exam . In common entrance exam , one student was passed in every four candidates. In the absence of a standardized school graduation examination, the university entrance exam were used as a replacement, known later as Matriculation examinations.

Apart from the secondary and higher secondary examinations, numerous universities have their own common entrance exam . These can be organized and conducted by the universities independently, by an examination board associated to an affiliated group of universities. There may be some attempt at standardization at the central level with common entrance exam like the CAT and AIEEE now commonly recognized by universities.

Many of these exams (particularly the UPSC's Engineering Services Examination, BITS Pilani admission test, IIT-JEE, CAT and AIPMT) are considered amongst the toughest in the world, with lakhs of students competing for a few thousand seats.

Recently, separate entrance tests were introduced for courses such as law and hotel management. Some colleges such as AIIMS and AFMC and many private medical colleges conduct their own entrance tests. However the college admission procedure in India remains somewhat controversial due to the presence of reservation of seats for "backward" castes.
